Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that there is conflict-a-brewin’ when it comes to American health insurance. This time, it comes in the form of a new Republican-led Senate bill.
The proposed bill is 142 pages and can be read right here. But, who has time for that? Here is the Sparknotes version:
The new bill would -
End the mandate that most Americans have to have health insurance
Create a tax credit system to help those who do
Give States the ability to drop benefits required now, like maternity care, emergency service, and mental health treatment
Would lower the income limit for receiving subsidies
Would phase out the extra money that the federal government has provided to states as an incentive to expand eligibility for Medicaid
- Provide $50 billion to help stabilize insurance markets and hold down premiums from 2018 through 2021
- And more. (Full text here.)
GOP leaders want to vote on the bill before the July 4th recess.
