Pavarotti! Bocelli! Callas! All famous opera singers. But did you know we have our own renowned opera singer? Myra Cordell is a local, soprano treasure + a name you should know.

She was raised in Greenville (and graduated from Wade Hampton and Furman), but calls New York home now. After graduation, Cordell spent time in Europe on scholarship to study with Tito Gobbi, another operatic great.

Haven’t heard of her? Check out videos of Cordell on youtube.

Like many opera singers, Cordell has the great opportunity of traveling the world (she has toured in Italy, Hungary, and Belgium, to name some places) in features like Tales of Hoffman, Anna Bolena, + Giulio Cesare.

Like most local artists, she has a connection to the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities. When she visits home, she has hosted workshops at the Governor’s School for inspiring singers + supported local charities like the Triune Mercy Center, and when she has time in N.Y., she runs a vocal training studio for emerging talent.

Cordell has been awarded the Francisco Vinas Competition in Spain, Vincenzo Bellini Competition in Italy, + Maria Malibran Award in Parma. Pretty impressive stuff this Greenvillian is doing, if you ask us.
