Greenville could add a Proterra bus to it’s 21-full sized diesel fleet if they win funding from a national Low/No grant program.

The Federal Transit Authority-funded program provided $55 million to local governments last year to buy electric busses, which included almost $4 million to the city of Clemson.

Greenlink and Proterra partnered to write the grant application, requesting $4.93 million for six buses and charging systems. Proterra, which recently closed a $55 million investment, has a Greenville production plant, and moved its HQ to California last year to be part of the Silicon Valley tech scene. Although, Greenville still doesn’t have one of the busses, produced right here at home.

Grant winners are expected to be announced at the end of September. If Greenville + Proterra win the money, $870,000 in matching funds will be needed additionally. Luckily, Proterra has already helped by giving discounts on its buses.

If the city wins the full grant, a third of its aging fleet would be replaced by the start of 2019.
