Gov. Henry McMaster cites concerns “with the vetting process” for refugees from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen (the six countries targeted by President Trump in his travel ban) in his request to the federal government to block refugees from those countries in S.C.
Here’s what we know –
- January 2017 was the last time refugees from any of those six countries were resettled in S.C.
- No refugees from any country have been resettled in South Carolina since May
- Each state is required to submit plan to the Department of Health and Human Services about how they’ll administer refugee services
- 1,278 refugees were resettled in S.C. between 2010 – 2016
World Relief Upstate S.C. and Lutheran Services Carolinas are doing contract work with the government to resettle refugees in South Carolina currently.
No word on the timeline for states refugee plans being approved by the Office of Refugee Resettlement, but we’ll keep you updated.
