Should we get rid of a portion of Main Street?

Yesterday, the Greenville Journal published an article by Bobby Barreto, a Greenville resident and CEO of Asterisk Development. As the title of the article suggests, Bobby wants to know if removing a piece of Main St. could help alleviate traffic and create a more pedestrian-focused downtown.

The proposed idea would be to remove vehicle access to Main St. between Beattie Place and Washington St. to create a large pedestrian hangout.

The proposal stems from the idea that many downtown goers tend to drive up and down Main St. every day seeking that “perfect spot” (yea, I’m guilty too) rather than parking in a garage or lot off of the main drag. If we take that option away, could our Main St. be more enjoyable to the people walking on it?
