Are scooters coming back in style?

1817 marked the invention of the first bike, and it’s popularity has only grown since – but your old classic bike might have some new competition coming to the neighborhood.

Dockless electric scooters are starting to take over cities and college campuses across the country. Even Greenville’s own Furman University has implemented them on campus using a company called Spin.

Spin provides dockless bikes and scooters to a community in hopes of creating a new, environmentally-friendly way to travel (that also makes you feel like a kid again). A valid driver’s license + $1 gets you a 30-minute ride on a scooter or bike that can be parked anywhere. While many cities have rental bike options, it is unusual to see a dockless system that also carries electric scooters, and it’s all done on a single app.

The Austin City Council in Texas is laying the foundation to combine these new modes of transportation in their own day-to-day lives. Within the next 6 months, the city will be testing + implementing the dockless bike + scooter life.

It’s National Bike to Work Day, but according to our Twitter followers, 61% of voters don’t see Greenville is a bikeable city. Could this work as an alternative? In other words – will we catch you riding a scooter on the streets of GVL?
