County Square redevelopment: Is affordable housing possible?

CountySquarePlan

Upstate Business Journal

Greenville’s County Square project is a big one. In fact, it’s one of the largest redevelopment projects Greenville has seen. The land is worth more than $2 million an acre, with 30 prime downtown acres currently being used for county offices.

The county has narrowed the playing field to three proposals (which are not public, yet). Homes of Hope, an affordable housing nonprofit has partnered with one of the developers to potentially build 78 housing units. The homes would support both high-end and lower-income residents.

“It would probably not make the county the most money,” Don Oglesby said, president and CEO of Homes of Hope. “But what if instead of putting the profits in our pockets, we put some of it into affordable homes for people?”
