A stop in Savannah is not complete without lunch at Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room on West Jones Street. Unfortunately, that lunch may take up several hours of your time. We waited in line for 2 hours to eat at Mrs. Wilkes and I’ll just say for the record: it was worth it. This is coming from a diner who won’t go to restaurants that have a wait (and don’t get me started on dinner-only restaurants that don’t take reservations).

The lunch at Mrs. Wilkes is tremendous is size and scope; dozens of bowls arrive family style at your table for 10: fried chicken, bbq, meatloaf, stew, chicken and dumplings, okra, creamed corn, two types of potatoes, two types of mac and cheese, rice, gravy, three different bowls of beans (baked, lima and black-eyed peas), salads, bread baskets, stewed tomatoes, green beans, cabbage, cubed squash, collards and I’m not naming them all. Sweet tea is poured aplenty and there’s dessert too and service is friendly and expedient. Nearly everyone who works at the restaurant is family or like family to the Wilkes.

It’s $23 per person and I doubt you’ll eat again that day. It is food coma city in the best way possible and indelibly worthy of your #BucketDish.
