Bringing back the town square

Greenville County Square

37 acres on University Ridge are primed to become Greenville County Square, and county officials have their eyes on the developer they want to turn at least three quarters of the land (valued at $2 million an acre) into residential and office space.

The county-owned land currently doesn’t collect property taxes, but if the county’s talks with their potential developer work out, a future development could be taxed up to $1.5 billion + create new office space in walking distance of Fluor Field (with no cost to taxpayers).

At least five acres of the land will remain in county hands: their current offices on the property will be demolished + a new 250,000 sq. ft. building will take its place. The county will continue business as usual during the multi-year construction of the square, so the design for their office building is the first priority.
Developers submitted proposals back in August, and the county is expected to announce the chosen developer (who County Councilman Ennis Fant said was “head and shoulders above everybody else”) in the coming months. We’ll be sure to keep y’all updated. 😎
