A 27 month sentence

Dylann Roof only shared his plans to massacre the congregation of Emanual AME Church in June 2015 with one person, Joey Meeks. Yesterday, Meeks was sentenced to 27 months in jail.

According to prosecutors, the 22-year-old first denied his knowledge of the plan and encouraged other friends he had told of Roof’s plot to not call authorities. Roof told Meeks about the shooting, which killed 9 people, a week prior.

(Note to self: It’s a baadddd idea to lie to the FBI.)

“We want other people in a similar situation to make the right decision that this defendant did not,” the judge in the Charleston trial said.

Meeks said “I’m really, really sorry. A lot of beautiful lives were taken.” He sent letters to the families of each victim apologizing after the shooting.
