A data breach of Duke Energy’s third-party payment processing system, Global Express, may have put the personal information of 374,000 Duke Energy customers at risk.
Global Express is owned by TIO Networks + was recently acquired by PayPal, who said in a news release that TIO Networks’ operations have been suspended. 1.6 million TIO Networks customers were affected.
Personal information that the breach might have exposed includes: name, address, Duke Energy account number, account balance + banking information (if the customer paid by check). If you were affected by the breach, you’ll be notified by TIO + receive instructions to register for a year complimentary credit monitoring.
Global Express is used to process energy bill payments at walk-in locations, so customers who pay bills in person will have to use alternatives: until a permanent solution is put in place, you can pay online, at Western Union, or call 800-777-9898.
