20 little-known cooperatives hold the fate of Santee Cooper

There are four potential buyers interested in purchasing Santee Cooper (an electric utility company in Anderson County): NextEra (FL-based), Southern Co. (ATL-based), Duke Energy, and Richmond-based Dominion.

Before Santee Cooper can be sold, any deal must first be approved by the General Assembly + 20 little-known electric cooperatives that serve about 764,000 S.C. residents and have contract for 70% of Santee Cooper’s electricity through 2058.

If Santee Cooper is sold, the co-ops can void their contract...which could definitely scare away any potential buyer. However, the cooperatives are certainly interested to see how offers might affect electricity rates charged to their customers.
