Volunteers assemble 10,000 sandwiches for local organizations in Greenville, SC

The National Sandwich Day celebration was a way for members of the hospitality community to give back + honor a Greenville Sandwich legend.

In honor of National Sandwich Day (Thurs., Nov. 3)200+ volunteers came together to make 10,000 pimento cheese sandwiches for 24 local organizations (think: Food banks, schools, soup kitchens, and shelters).

In addition to providing meals to thousands of Greenvillians, the event paid homage to local sandwich icon, Eugenia Duke , the namesake of Duke’s Mayonnaise:

  • The 10,000 sandwiches represent the day in 1919 when Eugenia sold 10,000+ sandwiches in one day.
  • The location, Wychee Pavilion, was the site where the original Duke’s Mayonnaise factory stood.
  • Duke’s donated 100 gallons of mayonnaise for the project, which helped make 156 gallons of pimento cheese, with 1,000 lbs of cheddar. That’s a lot of cheese.

The sandwiches will be distributed to organizations Fri., Nov. 4, and extras will be available to those in need at Feed and Seed (701 Easley Bridge Rd., Ste. 6010) on Sat., Nov. 5. You can pick up a sandwich, no questions asked, 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m.
