By now, you’re likely aware of the Swamp Rabbit Trail Green Line Extension project, a future 4.5-mile stretch of trail from Cleveland Park, along Laurens Road to Clemson University’s ICAR Building. ICYMI, here is a refresh.

While the two new pedestrian bridges on the extension are underway, the Richland Way underpass has been a topic of discussion among city staff and locals.

What’s currently in question is the way it serves as the connection between Cleveland Park and the Green Line Extension. The underpass is a 10-ft-high, 17-ft-wide tunnel that allows for two-way motor and pedestrian traffic.

Opinions are mixed on the fate of the tunnel, with many locals, cyclists, and advocacy organizations favoring its full closure to vehicle traffic, while others, including city employees and members of council, favor considering ways to convert the underpass to accommodate one-way traffic.
