🏗️ It’s all about the climb

Honor Tower at Unity Park is climbing towards its opening this year. The latest milestone: 352 stairs that will bring visitors to its 99-ft-high observation deck are currently being installed.

Once complete, there will be 22 staircases + 20 landings in a double-helical design (think: like a DNA molecule) that keep ascending and descending traffic separate — a very intentional design choice by the architect Paul Endres of Endrestudio.

Though designed by the California-based architect, they were crafted in the Upstate by The Heirloom Companies — the same team that made the UNITY sign and the park’s signature picnic shelters.

Asked

When the Honor Tower opens, are you taking all 352 stairs?

A. Yes — it’ll be a great workout.

☕ Life is short — get that coffee

Cleaning? Not today. Coffee? Always. | Photos provided by Two Maids of Greenville
Why spend your free time tackling chores when you could be relaxing at one of Greenville’s local coffee shops?

Take Mercato Cafe and Coffee at Bridgeway Station in Simpsonville, for example. This cozy spot has plenty of natural light from its floor-to-ceiling windows, comfortable seating, and outdoor tables — perfect if you’re bringing a furry friend along.

And the menu? It’s definitely more exciting than vacuuming:
  • Harambe hazelnut mocha latte | Smooth, nutty, and just sweet enough to make you forget about housework.
  • Lavender hot chocolate with almond milk | A floral twist on the classic winter favorite.
  • Spinach feta pastry | Light, flaky, and packed with tangy pops of feta.
  • “Cruffin” | A buttery, flaky croissant-muffin hybrid worth every bite.
Housework can wait. Your coffee break, however, cannot. And when you come home to a freshly cleaned space, you’ll wonder why you didn’t call Two Maids of Greenville sooner.

News Notes

Weather

Ahhhh, faux spring. Yesterday’s 81° is tied for the warmest February day on record.

Development

We told you developers want to rezone Heddle Hill on Rutherford Road for a mixed-use project featuring homes, commercial space, and green space, but Greenville County denied it on Jan. 22, citing the prospect of homes near an industrial operation. The plans will return to the Planning and Development Committee for reconsideration. (The Post and Courier Greenville)

Civic

The City of Greenville is fixing multiple areas along the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail that were damaged by Helene. The wooden footbridge at Willard Street near Unity Park will reopen this morning + later in the week, crews will work near Sliding Rock Creek Trail and Alameda Street.

Asked

What would Greenville look like without cars on Main Street? That’s the question Car Free Greenville — a local account reimagining our streets — asked on its Instagram. “Imagine: No angled street parking. Wider sidewalks. A fully pedestrianized Main Street… This vision could make Greenville a national leader in livability, sustainability, and economic vibrancy.” What do you think?

Drink

Pangaea Brewing is now pouring two brews made in partnership with Scout’s Doughnuts. Sip the Donutcha Love Horchata (a Nitro stout with sticky rice sweetness, whole bean vanilla, cinnamon, and lactose) + Riding the Cocoa Wave (cocoa powder, milk sugar, and coarse sea salt) while supplies last.

1,600. That’s how many people attended this year’s Lunar New Year Festival at Sum Bar. ICYMI, Sum Bar has more celebrations for the remainder of Lunar New Year, through Wednesday, Feb. 12.

Williams-Brice Stadium renovations are moving forward after receiving state approvals. USC tapped Populous, a globally-recognized design firm behind projects for the Yankees, Chiefs, and Olympic Games, to lead the redesign. The university will seek final approval on the project’s full scope and cost later this year.

GVL_Danielle_Wrap_NOV2024
I set a goal to read 50 books this year, and I’m already 20% of the way there after crushing 10 books in January. Shout out to any of you currently nursing an “Onyx Storm” hangover — I feel you. I’m especially excited about my first February read because the author will be at M. Judson later this month.
