Wake up and smell the ice cream

No need to make pancakes this morning. Ice cream for breakfast day is happening right now.

First celebrated in the 1960s when a Rochester, NY family ate ice cream for breakfast during a blizzard, the informal holiday aims to “liven up the first weekend of February with something silly and sweet.”

Here’s where to celebrate in Greenville:

Clare’s Creamery

Both locations open at 9 a.m. with specials like donut sundaes (made with Scout’s Doughnuts + Parlor Doughnuts), breakfast-inspired ice cream flavors, and hot coffee from Bridge City Coffee.

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream

Also opening at 9 a.m., this scoop shop is launching a brand new breakfast-inspired flavor: Blueberry Johnny Cakes. Gluten-free corn cakes are slightly toasted and tossed in a rich, buttery, and slightly salty sweet cream with a bright blueberry jam made with maple syrup.

News Notes

Holiday

Tomorrow is Groundhog Day, when Punxsutawney Phil will emerge and predict whether or not we’ll see an early spring. If you don’t trust Phil’s judgement, feel free to consult our seasonal weather forecast through March.

Eat

Pricey avocado toast isn’t looking so bad these days. Egg prices are expected to increase ~20% in 2025 due to a strain of avian flu and inflation, according to the US Department of Agriculture. Try grabbing eggs at a local market instead of the supermarket, where prices are at record or near-record highs. (CNN)

Drink

Costco is going back to Coke. After switching to Pepsi in 2013, Costco will flip-flop back to Coca-Cola products in its food courts this summer. But which do you drink? Let us know. (USA Today)

Outdoors

It will soon cost $15,000 to climb Mount Everest when Nepal raises its permit fee by over 35% in September. Or you could hike one of our perfectly good trails right here in Greenville. (Reuters)

Speaking of $10 lunches, one of my favorite content creators — @hungryasianrke — has a great series featuring places to grab lunch for $10 or less. Though he is based in Virginia, he always comes to euphoria and shoots some episodes while he’s in town. Check out his visits to Grazeland Deli, Spinx, and Papi’s Tacos (featuring yours truly).
