What’s in a name?

What our readers actually call things

Last month (we think it’s crazy that it’s already September, too) we posted this reel on Instagram. Most of our comments were people telling us they still call The Bon Secours Wellness Arena (aka The Well) “The Bi-Lo Center.” That got our gears turning... what else do Greenvillians call landmarks and businesses that aren’t their real names. As good journalists, we asked.

“I still call the Greenville Convention Center ‘Textile Hall,’ because that was its name when I was growing up.” — Nancy K.

“My friends have called BlocHaven ‘the Bloc’ or a new favorite, ‘BlocHeaven.’” — Cole C.

“‘The Mimi Park’ — McPherson Park, where my daughter was taken by grandmother ‘Mimi’ to swing and dance in the gazebo.” — E. Mays

“‘The Shops at Gridlock’ rather than ‘The Shops at Greenridge’ on Woodruff Road. No explanation necessary.” — Chris G.

“The Landmark Building is thankfully being renamed to the Daniel Building since everyone refers to it as that anyhow!” — Ann C.

“When Linky Stone Park had the large bear carving, my little girl always asked to go to the ‘Winnie-a-Pooh Park.’” — Brian M.

“Even though it’s officially ‘Augusta Street,’ everyone calls it ‘Augusta Road.’” — Susan W.

"Harambe Memorial Bridge. It feels too right to be wrong.” — Kimberly C.

“This is G’ville and we drive on P’burg and take 85 to S’burg.” — Ali B.

“My hubs refers to Pleasantburg as the ‘burg of pleasantries’. So, that’s what we call it! — Jen F.

“When my son was first learning to read, he thought the neon Krispy Kreme sign said ‘Happy Home.’ He would always tell us he wanted to go to the Happy Home store, but we had no idea what he was talking about. We continue to call it that to this day.” — Christy S.

“Harris Teeter. When my daughter couldn’t remember its name quickly, she called it ‘Harris Tooter Scooter Booter.’” — Jen

Which unhinged Lowe’s Halloween decoration are you?

A series of images highlighting outdoor Halloween decorations including life size skeletons
If you’re as obsessed with Halloween decor as these locals are, you’re going to love Lowe’s new collection. | Photos provided by COLAtoday + GVLtoday.
Every year the life-size animatronic Halloween decorations get bigger, spookier, and well — more chaotic. This year is no exception, so we want to know:

Which life-sized Halloween decoration best matches your personality?
  1. The 8-ft skeleton: You have classic taste. You don’t believe in following the trends. You know what you like and you stick to it.
  2. The Haunted Harbor Sea Captain: You’re a natural-born leader. You love to plan a night out and always know the best new spots in town (thanks to GVLtoday).
  3. The Dancing Wednesday Addams: You’re sarcastic and have a dark sense of humor, but you’re a loyal friend and an accidental trendsetter.
  4. The Haunted Mansion Musical Headless Knight: You’re kind + lovable but often forgetful. Your friends are used to helping you search for your phone.
Bone-us: Lowe’s has even more creepy characters to help you become your neighborhood’s chaos agent this Halloween season.^

I get really excited when there’s any sort of animal news in Greenville. The News Note about the goats was one of my favorites of all time. Do you think they’ll let me pet them?
