Gone but not forgotten

Answered: Reminisce on closed Greenville businesses

Between reader-submitted staples and social media shout-outs, we’ve gathered the names of hundreds of closed Greenville businesses that have everyone singing, “Baby Come Back.”

While we can’t illuminate the “open” neon, we can reminisce (again) with a more robust roundup. This is not a full list of businesses you listed, these are just the most mentioned.

Birds Fly South | 7 years in business | This brewery + taproom was a staple in the Greenville beer scene. Its closure in September 2023 shocked the city.

The Chocolate Moose | 9 years in business | The Chocolate Moose always knew how to satisfy your sweet tooth. Its cookies, cake pops, cupcakes, and breads always hit the spot.

Barley’s | ~30 years in business | This taproom was known for its pizzas, beer selection, and pool tables.

Bake Room | 5 years in business | We’re not sure what we miss more: The morning buns or the ham and cheese croissants.

Husk + Husk Barbeque | 5 years in business | After the pandemic, Husk re-opened as a barbecue concept, and boy was it good.

Basta | ~3 years in business | The vegan treats from Basta were so good, you didn’t know they were vegan.

Lemongrass Thai Cuisine | 25 years in business | You never left Lemongrass hungry. The chicken pad thai was one of City Editor Stephanie’s favorite dishes in Greenville.

EXILE | ~2 years in business | EXILE was the name and craft cocktails were the game. With some of the best bartenders in the biz, this hidden spot was a diamond in the rough.

Tommy’s Country Ham House | ~40 years in business | Now the site of Lewis Barbecue, this family-owned joint was famous for its smoked meats and delicious sides.

It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s Superfund.

A look at the past and future of Union Bleachery in Greenville, SC

Redevelopment and cleanup efforts are progressing for the Union Bleachery — 3335 Old Buncombe Rd. — also known as a Superfund site thanks to a $10 million dollar award from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

How much will the redevelopment cost?

A few years ago, the estimated cost was ~$1 billion. Since then, the cost has risen to $2+ billion. The EPA awarded a total of $1 billion to remaining Superfund sites in the US, and $10 million will be going to the Bleachery.

What is the Superfund program?

According to the EPA, the Superfund program is responsible for “cleaning up some of the nation’s most contaminated land + responding to environmental emergencies, oil spills and natural disasters.”

Why does Union Bleachery qualify?

High levels of chromium + asbestos and arsenic were found in the soil and groundwater. The $10 million will help treat + cleanup the groundwater and is expected to start this year.
