Urban planning group PLUSURBIA DESIGN revealed what the future of the Greenville Gateway could become last week.

Back in February, we told you about local automotive marketing agency DOM360’s desire to refresh a corridor of Greenville known as the Greenville Gateway, located off I-385 as you enter downtown.

After a series of community meetings and a survey earlier this year (which received 479 responses), the urban design group designed a future look for specific areas of the corridor, including:
  • Bon Secours Wellness Arena
  • East North Street (at the end of I-385 + continuing past The Well)
  • Pettigru Historic District
Some of the most notable changes proposed include transforming East North Street with trees, bike lanes + additional apartments and shifting the Bon Secours Wellness Arena’s entrance into a pedestrian-friendly entertainment hub with restaurants and outdoor space.

Former City Editor Ana here. 👋 I’m back today because I jumped at the chance to take part in Type Designing — a course offered by Greenville Tech’s Department of Visual Arts program.

You don’t have to have any formal art training to enroll in the two-year program. Bonus: The coursework is rigorous but fun and taught by experienced professors who care.

Here’s how you (or the artsy student in your life) can Try This.

What we tried (with pricing):

Unfortunately, you can’t just walk in and spend a day in class like we did. However, you can enroll in the Visual Arts program and work towards an Associate in Arts (A.A.) degree by completing one of five transfer tracks.

Another option would be to get a Certificate in Artswhich includes advanced arts training but without the additional general education courses required for a degree.

Bonus: Greenville Tech has announced $0 tuition options for students next semester. Keep reading to see how the rest of our experience went.*

Can you spot the copperhead?

A tweet of a patch of brown leaves tweeted by @SssnakeySci which reads "Received this from a fellow HERper this morning. No caption needed, the task was implied: "Can you spot the snake?"
We’ll give you a hint: Zooming in isn’t helpful. | Screenshot via @SssnakeySci
Maybe you’ve seen this viral photograph of a copperhead nestled among the leaves. Sssso while you ssssearch, we wanted share some hints on what to look for to spot the venomous snake:

🐍 They are about two to three feet long.
🐍 They have dark brown, hourglass-shaped bands.
🐍 Young copperheads have bright yellow tips on their tails.

Copperheads aren’t the only venomous snake in the Upstate. That’s why Clemson University Ph.D. graduate Rhett Rautsaw created VenomMaps, which shows the areas where all 158 pit viper species live in North, South, and Central America.
