490,000. That’s Feeding America’s estimated number of South Carolinians facing hunger + food insecurity (lack of access to enough food to live a healthy lifestyle).

In an effort to serve the state’s families facing food insecurity, students of Clemson University’s College of Behavioral, Social and Health Sciences + the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) Environmental Affairs joined forces to create a statewide Food Access Map.

The map

The map features 900+ locations across 46 counties of food pantries and resources, with each point including information about their hours, contact details, and how to prepare for a visit to each location (read: bring an ID or fill out an application). Users can also find DHEC + South Carolina Department of Social Services office locations.

The inspiration

The concept of the statewide map was inspired by an Upstate-specific food map also created by Clemson’s College of Behavioral, Social and Health Sciences in partnership with United Way and Ten at the Top in 2020, featuring nearly 400 providers across 10 counties.

‘Tis the season for hockey... and babies

What do newborn babies + the Swamp Rabbits hockey team have in common? This season, it’s more than you think. 🏒

Bon Secours St. Francis Health System has partnered with the Swamp Rabbits + Gerber Childrenswear to launch the Born and Raised 864 program, which provides custom Swamp Rabbits body suits to babies born during the 2022-2023 season. It also comes with a game-ticket certificate for “Baby’s First Hockey Game” — redeemable for any game through the 2023-2024 season.

Swamp Rabbits President Todd Mackin says, “We pride ourselves as being a community-first organization, and there is no greater way to embody this idea than to partner with two staples of this community and do so in a way that raises the next generation of Swamp Rabbits fans.”

Happy hockey season, baby(s).
THE WRAP
Today’s issue was written by Kyle.

Editor’s pick: It’s hard to believe the holiday season is nearly upon us. I love a good gift guide like Clemson World Magazine’s 2022 lineup, especially for the inspiration for unique, local gift ideas. While he won’t admit it, I know my dad is tired of receiving variations of golf balls and tees every year. If you could dream up the ultimate Greenville gift guide, what would be on it? My list would have to include a Windham Wicks candle + a pair of the red and green socks from Mast General Store (you know the ones). Share your list with me.
