We have a fun #TBT for you today. We stumbled upon these archives from the Greenville County Library system + wondered – what were people talking about in 1925?
We found a Greenville Journal edition from August, 1925 – 94 years ago to the month – and saw that, that year, Greenville was celebrating some pretty big developments.
“An amazing record for one year”
The Journal reported that, in twelve months, the business district in Greenville saw more than $2,500,000 worth of building. Here’s a few of the highlighted developments (that we could find pictures of):
The Poinsett Hotel (now the Westin Poinsett Hotel)
The Carolina Theatre – the paper reads, “It [the theatre] is universally acknowledged the most beautiful and the most elegantly appointed playhouse in the Carolinas.”
The Chamber of Commerce building – “No building ever erected in Greenville has brought to this city more wide-spread publicity than the Chamber of Commerce structure, now nearing completion.”
The Keith Development – “One of the largest of the commercial structures erected in the city in recent years is the home of the Craig-Rush Furniture company.” Next to the, at the time, largest furniture store in S.C., they were constructing the Rivoli theatre, which wasn’t yet complete in August of 1925.
A new bank building – the People’s National Bank “will be one of the handsomest bank structures in Greenville.”
It seems like 1925 was a pretty big development year for the City of Greenville. If you love browsing through historical pictures like I do, you can scroll for days at the link here.
