El Thrifty social club + cantina opened earlier this month at 25 Delano Dr., and we headed over ASAP to try out their games (and maybe a margarita or two…). The 10,000-square-ft. “local living room” includes 8 adult-focused games to play between dinner + cocktails, which cost $5/30 min.

The one competition we couldn’t miss: Quiote, El Thrifty’s signature game.

Quiote is similar to the Belgian game feather bowling, and is played by rolling a handmade wooden “queso” (shaped like a wheel of cheese 😋) down a contoured lane with team markers on either end. Each team tries to land their quesos closest to their team’s marker.

El Thrifty is one of only four feather bowling spots in the country, and the Quiote lane’s wooden structure + the quesos were custom-made by local woodworkers Slab. $10 gets you 30 minutes of play time, but there’s a 15-minute grace period in case things heat up.

Be ahead of the competition the next time you stop by with these pro tips:

  1. Teams are split into Rabbits and Skulls. The lane’s team markers + each queso will have a Rabbit or Skull symbol.
  2. Each team rolls all of their quesos in one turn – no alternating. There are six wooden quesos per team, and after Team Rabbit and Team Skull both roll, points are counted up.
  3. Use the curve of the lane to your advantage. Throwing at an angle and letting the queso roll up and around can land you right on the marker.
  4. Points are scored by counting up the number of quesos of one team inside the closest queso of the other team. For example, if team Rabbit walks to their marker and sees a Skull queso 1 ft. away, all of Team Rabbit’s quesos inside that 1 ft. radius are worth one point
  5. Start on opposite ends of the lane for the next round. First team to 10 points wins.

Quiote might be the game at El Thrifty with the most Boomerang-worthy moments, but El Thrifty also features Pelota, Fúsbol, and Hockey de Aire. Click here to learn about aaaall the games + rules (and get ready to own the competition). 💪

El Thrifty was the perfect Friday afternoon hang-out spot for our team – where’s your go-to place to spend the evening with a big group? Send an email + let us know.

Here’s to trying new things + welcoming a broad variety of cultures to Greenville. 👏
