City Editor Kyle here 👋. The only thing I love more than eating pizza? Making it. I took a hands-on pizza-making class at Greenville Tech’s Truist Culinary & Hospitality Innovation Center (CHI), where we got our hands dirty, learned a lot, and feasted on our creations.

I joined nine classmates for a three-hour class in CHI’s commercial kitchen . We each received an apron and a course packet with recipes + ingredients to make dough and sauce. Different spices and toppings were at our disposal to personalize our two Neapolitan pizzas and one additional style ‘za (Sicilian or Detroit) — all to be cooked in CHI’s woodfire ovens — and, of course, to be eaten afterward.

Hands-on classes like this are $89, and demonstrations + tastings are $39.

They call this “The Steering Wheel.”

Our course instructor, Chef Jay, is an experienced culinary educator. He thoroughly walked us through each step of the pizza-making process and explained different techniques + best practices, like what flours yield different types of crust and how to spot overworked dough.

He even had a dad joke or two to keep the class laughing. You could say Chef Jay had a-pizza all our hearts.

The more cheese, the merrier.

Did you know that when you sign up for a cooking class at CHI, you’re officially enrolled as a Greenville Tech continuing education student? Once you wrap your class, you’ll receive a certificate of completion showing fulfillment of continuing education hours. I now have .3 CE credits and pizza leftovers for days.
