🔎 Honoring a local Revolutionary War hero

The City of Travelers Rest is currently fundraising to bring The Dicey Langston Heritage Garden to life.

“The garden will serve as a living classroom,” its website says, “celebrating heritage, cultivating curiosity, and growing a shared vision for the future.”

Laodicea “Dicey” Langston Springfield, the project’s namesake who will have a statue in the garden, was born in 1766 in Ninety Six before living in Travelers Rest. She’s a celebrated Revolutionary-era heroine known for her work as a spy. There are plans for an immersive spy hunt that follows in her footsteps during the war.

Signs around the park will also showcase our nation’s Charters of Freedom (the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and Bill of Rights), and the garden will highlight native plants.

To help bring that vision to life, the City of Travelers Rest is hosting a fundraising dinner at Michelin-recommended Topsoil on Wednesday, May 6 from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

Scholarships, grants, and support — Greenville Tech helps make college affordable and accessible. | Photo provided by Greenville Technical College
For many students, the cost of college can feel like a barrier — but Greenville Technical College (GTC) is working to change that. With a focus on accessibility, GTC supports students from all backgrounds and life stages.

Through the Greenville Tech Foundation, scholarships help make education possible:
  • $1.1 million+ awarded in 2025 across 917 scholarships
  • 200+ scholarships available to GTC students
  • One simple application matches students based on eligibility
Many students assume they won’t qualify — but often, they do.

Beyond scholarships, GTC offers additional financial support, including:
  • Federal Pell Grants and SC Lottery Tuition Assistance
  • Career Pathways Scholarship
  • Work-study opportunities and student loans
Students don’t have to navigate costs alone. Submit a free application, complete enrollment steps, and apply for scholarships by May 1 to maximize opportunities.

The Wrap

Today’s edition by: Danielle

If you’re headed to the ballpark for this week’s homestand, remember to try the limited-edition menu item only available this week. I indulged in the Ballpark Brisket Bahn Mi for dinner last night with brisket, pickled cabbage, carrots, boom boom sauce, and cilantro on a hoagie roll.

Plus, I got to watch my friend Catherine Schumacher throw out the first pitch. She killed it.
