News Notes

Greenvillian

Mayor Knox White was surprised with the Order of the Palmetto at the Honor Tower dedication. “The man is experienced, and he has put his heart into this place,” Governor Henry McMaster said as he awarded White SC’s highest civilian honor. “This place is an absolute masterpiece, and I want to thank you for that.”

Number

$850,000. That’s how much Greenville City Council approved in hospitality tax funds to match a federal grant for a $1.7 million McPherson Park improvement project. Planned upgrades include a new playground, repaired paths, refreshed sod, LED lighting, a new picnic shelter, and updates to the park’s mini-golf course. (Greenville Journal)

Civic

Greenville City Council gave initial approval to an ordinance that would prohibit sleeping or residing on most public property. The proposal — which includes fines up to $10 and connections to local support services — still requires a final vote (currently scheduled for Monday, Nov. 24) before it could take effect on March 1, 2026. (Greenville Journal)

Cause

Project Host, Bon Secours Wellness Arena, and the Greenville Police Department will host a Fill the Cruiser food drive on Wednesday, Nov. 19 from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the GSP Airport Box Office. Donations benefit Project Host’s Soup Kitchen.

Closing

If you plan to eat at Mr. Crisp one more time before the Overbrook restaurant closes after service this Saturday, Nov. 15, reservations are recommended. It has been close to full capacity every night leading up to its closing.

Traffic

Greenville City Council received an update on the city’s Pedestrian Safety Action Plan, which has added 600 new pedestrian ramps, installed 679 high-visibility crosswalks, and repaired 300 ft of sidewalks to improve walkability and accessibility citywide. (Greenville Journal)

Eat

You won’t be without Chef Carlos Baez’s food for long. After Mr. Crisp closes, he’s starting a pop-up and private dining concept called Pride & Joy Provisions, “where every plate carries a bit of story, soul, and home.”

Food, fellowship, and a farewell

“Food is a binder. It’s what brings us together.” That’s the theme every time we chat with Chef Dayna Lee, owner of Comal 864.

For the fifth (and final) year, Lee is organizing a community meal that will serve hundreds of Greenvillians beginning at 12 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. Comal 864’s final service at its Woodside location will be Saturday, Nov. 29, making way for Little Secret to take over in early 2026. You can still enjoy Lee’s food at her restaurant’s Midtown location.

The 2023 James Beard Semifinalist is quick to serve others, from the guests enjoying her birria tacos to community members in need of a warm coat. She’s given away 10,000+ tacos to people experiencing food insecurity.

“Let me make you a plate so we can bond,” Lee says. “Whether you’re here because you need food, because you’re alone for the holiday, or because you’d like to serve, my biggest goal is that we have a space to be together.”

The Wrap

I learned a few new facts about the Honor Tower at yesterday’s dedication, straight from the architect Paul Endres of Endrestudio:
  • This is the first observation tower built in the US in the last 25 years.
  • It is mostly made by local companies like Heirloom, SC Steel, and Harper General Contractors.
  • The six pillars of the tower represent the armed forces, police, fire, utilities and public works, EMS, and public health workers. The twisting design supporting the observation deck “represents the united effort of first responders and civil servants in a constantly changing world.”
You can read more about the design, the local companies that helped craft it, and how it was funded.
