In the late 1950s, Greenville and Spartanburg each had their own airports, but neither could keep up with the demands of modern jet travel. Enter Roger Milliken and Charlie Daniel, who, along with other Upstate leaders, envisioned a single facility that could serve the entire region. They identified the community of Flatwood — situated between the two cities — as the perfect location thanks to its long, level terrain. Land purchases began in 1958, and construction followed a few years later.

We dug through old editions of the Greenville News from that time, which boasted of non-stop flights to New York City by 1964. Who’s going to tell them we now have multiple flights between here and NYC every day?
