Council says it plans to keep street parking free. | Photo by GVLtoday
The City of Greenville is considering an increase in the cost of parking in garages. At a work session on Monday, Aug. 11, city council reviewed a proposal that increases:
The second hour fee to $4 (from $2)
Each additional hour to $2 (from $1)
The daily maximum to $10 (from $7)
According to the Greenville Journal, Mayor Knox White asked staff to look into extending free parking to the second hour in garages. Other changes include increasing event parking fees from $5 to $10 and raising the cost of monthly parking rates.
How did we get here? The city compared our parking fees with similar cities in the region in hopes of aligning our rates. As development continues in Greenville, city leaders want to support future parking garage projects with the additional revenue.
This was just the start of conversations, and while we don’t know a timeline for these discussions to continue, we do know Greenville has ~8,000 parking spots.
