🍞 But daddy I loaf him

Starter your engines. Sourdough is soaring in popularity, and according to Google Trends, so is interest in making your own — surpassing 2020’s pandemic-induced explosion in interest earlier this year.

If you’re among those baking some new habits into your life via flour and yeast, here are a few ways to get in on the action in GVL:
  • Front Yard Foods hosts frequent classes for beginners — the perfect way to get newbies introduced to the process alongside expert instructor Laura.
  • Once you’re a little further along, the fine folks at Le Petit Croissant are hosting a class for advanced bread makers later this year. The public class is BYOB, and if you’ve got a group of six or more people, you can book a session anytime.
  • Or get in touch with Simpsonville’s Flour Petals Sourdough for an intimate three-hour, hands-on, all-encompassing intro to the practice.
For those who prefer their loaves made by an expert, there’s a bunch of spots around town to get your fill of doughy goodness...
Are you bready for it?

Drink

Save the date, pumpkin spice latte people — the beloved beverage will return to Starbucks on Tuesday, Aug. 26. Need something to sip in the meantime? Try a seasonal drink at one of Greenville’s local coffee shops.

Pets

Talk about a golden opportunity — auditions are now open for “Air Bud Returns,” the latest installment in the beloved movie series. If you want to sign up your golden retriever, you’ll need to submit a video of their best skills. For the camera-shy dogs, 80+ pet-friendly ideas await in town.

Listen

Do you feel like popular music has been a summer bummer recently? The lack of upbeat hits has resulted in many people deeming 2025 a year without a song of the summer. Luckily, Greenville has many upcoming concerts that will give us something to listen to in the fall. (CNN)

Number

12,027. That’s roughly how many feet the world’s longest suspension bridge will be once completed. The project recently received final approval in Italy, and will connect the boot-shaped mainland with the island of Sicily. Comparing that to Liberty Bridge’s 345 ft helps put it in perspective. (BBC)

Eat

When it comes to sweet treats, Benne Wafers take the cake in South Carolina, according to a new list of the most iconic desserts in the US by state. Lucky for Greenville locals, there are plenty of places to satisfy your sweet tooth. (Condé Nast Traveler)

Legacy Park in Greenville SC

We recently wrote about South Korea’s outdoor library concept, and were we’d like to see one in Greenville. Our suggestion? Runway Park for a unique aviation-centric backdrop.

After that, your own ideas flooded in. Here are a few of them:
  • “On the back part of Falls Park by the creek. The sound of water and the shaded area would be great for outdoor reading.” — Tammie W.
  • “The Old Mill on Reedy River would be cool. People watching, soothing sounds of the river, shady, and plenty of fun spots to get cozy with a good book. <3" — Kayla N.
  • “Camperdown because it is perfect to grab a book and then a short walk to a Falls Park bench for a nice afternoon of reading...” — Jodee H.
  • “Paris Mtn. State Park — to be amongst the trees!” — Karen T.
There’s dozens more ideas to browse through — see which ones you like, or submit a response of your own.

Post of the Day

The scene features rows of white chairs and couches facing a large outdoor screen with the “Rooftop Cinema Club” logo. A city skyline is visible in the background, and a few illustrated people are seated or walking around. The caption announces plans for a rooftop cinema in Greenville, SC, pending zoning approval.

Speaking of enjoying art in the great outdoors, another opportunity to do so is in the works for Greenville.

City officials recommended approval for a rooftop cinema to open along University Ridge atop a seven-story parking garage planned for the County Square redevelopment project. But don’t crack open the popcorn just yet — we’ll be waiting until 2027 for this one.

The Wrap

Last weekend, my wife and I indulged in some nostalgia and went to one of her favorite childhood candy stores. We grabbed a bag and strolled past the various containers, scooping whatever brightly colored treasure took our fancy.

When we placed the bag on the front desk, the worker said, “this one’s on the house.” It was a small gesture, but one that stuck with me — random acts of kindness have a funny way of doing that. I’ll be paying it forward this weekend.
