Summer travel is in full swing, and Meals on Wheels of Greenville is facing a critical shortage of delivery volunteers. With 140+ routes to cover every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, they need help now more than ever.

The good news? You can help fill the gap. And you don’t have to do it alone. Grab a friend, coworker, or even your book club and spend your lunch break delivering nutritious meals to homebound neighbors.

You can get started by attending a quick volunteer orientation:
  • Virtual sessions are held every Thursday at 9:30 a.m. via Zoom.
  • Upcoming in-person sessions are on Thursday, July 10 at 5:30 p.m. + Tuesday, Aug. 12 at 9:30 a.m. at the Meals on Wheels office (15 Oregon St.).
Whether you go solo or as a group, just one hour of your time can make a big difference for a neighbor in need.

Environment

A rare king rail — a famously secretive marsh bird — was recently spotted and photographed in Clemson Experimental Forest, far outside its usual wetlands range. Local birders are thrilled by the elusive visitor, but experts say its presence is also a reminder of the importance of protecting sensitive habitats. (The Post and Courier Greenville)
That midday fireball seen falling from the sky in Greenville was a rare meteor — not tied to a meteor shower — that blazed across Southeast skies from June 26. Furman physicist David Moffett says it likely came in from the sun’s direction, making it impossible to spot in advance.
