The Biltmore in spring is teeming with florals, miles of hiking + biking, and locally-sourced wines. | Photos by AVLtoday
We have a bit of extraspring in our step this week after spending a day exploring the blooming Biltmore Estate®as Annual Passholders — complete with all the exclusive perks that come with it. Here’s how it went.
What we tried
We started with a self-guided tour of the Walled Garden + Conservatory to see the 8,000-acre estate’s greenery come to life. Pro tip: The Conservatory is in bloom year-round, making it the perfect winter or rainy day activity.
After the gardens, Biltmore Winery in Antler Hill Village welcomed us with a crisp white wine — crafted with grapes grown at the on-site vineyard.
An Annual Pass gets you access to everything we experienced + more, including unlimited daytime visits and discounts on events + exhibitions like the brand-new Tutankhamun: His Tomb and His Treasures.
According to the SC Forestry Commission, the recent rain “greatly reduced fire activity” and allowed crews to work along the edge of the fire. As of yesterday afternoon, the Table Rock wildfire is up to 13,191 acres and 30% contained + the Persimmon wildfire is up to 2,058 and is 64% contained.
Coming Soon
Remember when we told you that STIR — a Chattanooga-based restaurant — was coming to East McBee Avenue? We have some stirring news. It’s set to open this spring. Soon you’ll be able to indulge in six types of Atlantic Coast oysters and a weekend brunch menu + sip handcrafted cocktails. (Greenville News)

The project — part of Habitat’s Bridge Building Series — kicks off on May 21 at the Phyllis Wheatley Center with celebration featuring speakers, performances, and a discussion about affordable housing. A look at what could have been. | Graphic by GVLtoday
GVLtoday had a good run, but it’s time to move on. We’ve decided to go back to our roots + rename our beloved publication PLBtoday after what Greenville was originally called — Pleasantburg, SC.
Let’s take it back.
1770 — Richard Pearis was gifted ~100,000 acres of land from the Cherokees and built a saw mill + grist. During the Revolutionary War, it was burned down and he left Upstate.
1784 — Lemuel Alston purchased ~11,000 acres of Pearis’s former land.
1786 — The state legislature formed Greenville (formerly Greeneville), named for General Nathanael Greene.
1794 — The Greenville county courthouse was built on Alston’s property. A few years later, Alston made a map of 60 lots for a village he called Pleasantburg. The lots didn’t sell well and the name Pleasantburg didn’t stick. Since the courthouse already had the name “Greenville...”
April Fools’, Greenville. Did we get you? PLBtoday just doesn’t have the same ring GVLtoday does, so we’ll stick with what works.
What would you name Greenville if you could? Let us know.
