Happy V(AI)lentine’s Day, Greenville

Cheers to love, real and fake. | Photo by @brittany.lapin
We want to play a game. Last month, we asked you for your Greenville meet cute stories for an experiment, but didn’t give many more details. The time has come to reveal our master plan.

Some of the six linked at the button are actual, true Greenville meet cute stories. The others were written by AI. It’s your job to decide which is which. After you read stories — like a chance connection at Coffee Underground and the fight for last chocolate at Swamp Rabbit Cafe — take the quiz down below and see how well you did.

Side note: We promise, we didn’t trick you. These aren’t either all real or all AI, there’s an even mix of both.
Meet cutes await

🌼 Pet owners: Beware of these bouquets

Presented by Upstate Vet Emergency + Specialty Care

Flowers are beautiful, but they can have some pretty serious consequences for pets. | Photos provided by Upstate Vet
Valentine’s Day brings love and sweet treats — but also hidden dangers for pets. Most pet parents know chocolate is toxic to dogs, but did you know certain flowers can also be dangerous?

Be sure to keep these blooms away from your furry friends:
  • Lilies | They’re extremely toxic to cats, causing kidney failure — even from just licking their pollen.
  • Chrysanthemums + daisies | These flowers can cause vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, and skin irritation.
  • Baby’s Breath | This dainty flora can lead to GI upset, vomiting, and diarrhea in dogs and cats.
  • Daffodils + tulips | The bulbs are the most toxic and can cause seizures, tremors, and heart problems.
  • Roses | These aren’t toxic, but the thorns can be dangerous if your pet steps on or swallows them.
Pro tip: If you suspect something is wrong with your pet, Upstate Vet is open 24/7 for emergencies.

“All the World’s a Stage”

During the 2024 SC New Play Festival, Greenville actress Eliza Pagelle played the role of Sam during the reading of “All the World’s a Stage.” Now, she’s making her Off-Broadway acting debut, originating the role in New York City.

The musical is about a small-town math teacher — who happens to be coaching a “misfit” student for the 1996 State Thespian Convention — whose life starts to go awry thanks to a devout school secretary.

Pagelle refined her talent at the Fine Arts Center and the SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities. She also starred locally in Warehouse Theatre productions + beyond Greenville at the Texas Shakespeare Festival and Tennessee Shakespeare Company.

Want to make the trip to the Big Apple to see this Greenville-originated show + star? Tickets are on sale now.

The Wrap

I’m personally not a big Valentine’s Day girl myself, but I did really enjoy reading all your true meet cute stories. This one didn’t make the list, but was one of my favorites.

“On one of our very first dates, John Legend quite literally put us in the spotlight—pulling us on stage during his All of Me Tour at the Peace Center (no pressure, right?). Seven years later, that same song became our first dance at our wedding. John Legend can officially add matchmaker to his resume, and one thing’s for sure—it couldn’t have worked out better!”
