♫ For the record

Drop the needle and let the record spin — tomorrow is Record Store Day (RSD), where independent music shops open early and offer limited edition vinyl. For collectors, it’s like Christmas Day and for music lovers, it’s an opportunity to show support for your favorite shop and artists.

We’re rounding up local record stores. Note: Not all stores participate in RSD, so if you’re looking for a specific pressing, we recommend calling ahead.

Horizon Records, 2-A W. Stone Ave., Greenville

This fan-favorite spot is located next to The Bohemian Cafe and will open promptly at 8 a.m. tomorrow. In years past, people have lined up hours before opening.

Cabin Floor Records, 1156 Rutherford Rd., Greenville

Since 2009, Cabin Floor has specialized in rare and vintage vinyl. We know they’ll have some RSD titles in stock because they teased Sonny Rollins’ ”Freedom Weaver: The 1959 European Tour Recordings” which is a 2024 RSD release.

Pharmacy Records, 21 Shoppers Dr., Greenville

This independent record store isn’t participating in RSD this year, but we recommend swinging by and browsing the used LPs. We’ve found some gems.

Bonus: BJ Music, 374 Whitney Rd., Spartanburg

While this isn’t a Greenville record store, we think it’s worth the drive to Spartanburg. City Editor Danielle here. For the past three Record Store Days, I’ve started my early morning at Horizon before making the drive to BJ, and I typically get my hands on any of the pressings I set out to find.

Find other participating stores

Use this map to search your zip code for a larger list of independent record stores across the Southeast participating in the Record Store Day celebration with promotions and RSD titles.

This month, we ran a poetry contest to celebrate National Poetry Month. We challenged our readers to craft a poem using only the words that appeared in one of our newsletters (here are the original contest guidelines if you want to give it a try).

While prose is our newsletter’s bread and butter, it turns out that you all certainly aren’t op-prose-d to verse; we received several creative, intriguing, and beautiful poems that we narrowed down to our top four finalists.

Give them a read with the button below, then vote on your favorite + we’ll announce the winner next week.
  • “From Here” by Casey L.
  • “Only Rabbits?” by Julianne S.
  • “Greenville Feel” by Shananay C.
  • “Upcountry Spring” by Caroline M.

From the editor
Happy “The Tortured Poets Department” release day to all who celebrate. There are a number of Swiftie celebrations taking place across our city this weekend. If you’re looking to celebrate today, I recommend visiting Horizon Records this morning, swinging by Page & Post in the afternoon, and dance the night away at either Group Therapy Pub & Playground or Other Lands.
