Welcome to the West End, Nic & Norman’s

Nic & Norman’s is now open in Greenville’s West End

The Smoke on the Water building located at 1 Augusta St. will soon be home to a Southern-inspired restaurant called Nic & Norman’s by Norman Reedus + Greg Nicotero. ICYMI, Smoke on the Water will close in March and plans to move to Pelham Road.

From TV to the kitchen

Recognize the names? The duo met on set of “The Walking Dead” and will open their fifth restaurant in the prominent building that sits at the gateway to Greenville’s West End.

Reedus is known for playing Daryl Dixon in front of the camera, and Nicotero was the special effects makeup artist on the show.

The Upstate Business Journal spoke with Senior Vice President of Operations for the restaurant David Valentine who said the concept began as a hang out spot for the cast and crew in Senoia, GA (where the show was filmed). Now, the restaurant has locations in Louisville + Lexington, KY and Chattanooga, TN.

The space

Get ready for some changes to the building you’ve dined at over the past two decades. Design plans for the space include moving the bar and the entrance to the front and putting the dining area in the back. Plus, there are plans to utilize the space outside the restaurant.

The eatery is described as having a “speakeasy” feel, and — though each location is unique — the existing locations feature movie memorabilia spanning the pair’s careers.

The menu

The food is Southern-inspired serving lunch, dinner, and brunch (on the weekends). The cocktail menu continues the “speakeasy” vibe and you can also sip on beer + wine.

Our friends at LOUtoday just covered the opening of the fourth location in their city in June 2023. Assistant Managing Editor Katie described the meatloaf with mashed potatoes, green beans, and cornbread as “the star dish” + tells us it’s made from a recipe that Reedus and Nicotero helped create.

Nic & Norman’s hopes to open this summer in June or July.

The history of lunch counter sit-ins

The history of lunch counter sit-ins in Greenville, SC

In the late summer of 1960, a group of Black students and alumni from Greenville’s first Black high school, Sterling High School, (including then-college freshman Jesse Jackson) walked inside the Greenville County Public Library and began browsing books and newspapers. This wasn’t allowed, as segregation was still prevalent in the South. Rather than changing its policies, the library temporarily shut down + quietly reopened as an integrated facility that September.

Following the library demonstrations, the group of activists began organizing sit-ins at segregated lunch counters at the Woolworth’s, S.S. Kress & Co., + the H.T. Grant’s stores downtown.

The student protesters were arrested and charged with trespassing. Working with NAACP lawyers, the group appealed the charges and the case was taken all the way to the Supreme Court.

In 1963, the protesters prevailed, when SCOTUS judges reviewed that case (combined with three similar cases) + decided it was unconstitutional to refuse service to someone because of their race.
