Six students from the Fine Arts Center (FAC) won awards in the YoungArts National Competition. This annual competition is for students aged 15 to 18, and awards are given in 10 disciplines (think: dance, voice, visual arts).
All who apply are judged by “esteemed, discipline-specific panels of artists” and go through a thorough blind judging process.
Of the ~700 students chosen, the FAC winners in Greenville are (in alphabetical order):
Emily Allison – Writing/Poetry
William Armstrong – Jazz/Piano
Blake Slaughter – Jazz/Guitar
Sun Clark – Writing/Spoken Word
Brady Green – Musical Theatre
Leah Rutherford – Voice/Jazz
These winners will receive $250.
Vee Popat, Director of the Fine Arts Center, said these awards are a “testament to the hard work that these fantastic students have put in” and FAC is “so proud of the achievement of our students.”
Additionally, Clark, Green + Rutherford were invited to participate in National YoungArts Week in January (after having also received the YoungArts Award with Distinction), where they will have the opportunity to win ~$10,000 in cash awards.
Congratulations to all the winners. We’re proud of you.

My husband and I were both born and raised in the Greenville/Greer area, but I’ve learned that we’re the exception, not the rule. We get it: Why wouldn’t you want to move to Greenville? Especially when you can subscribe to GVLtoday.
