Whether you’re a Greenville native or a relative newcomer, there are just some things every Greenvillian understands to be true.
We asked our readers to share Greenville’s unwritten rules, from common city knowledge to relatable trends and local lingo. You won’t find these rules in a handbook, but they are undoubtedly absorbed by the community — and if you’re not from Greenville, these might be a little difficult to explain.
The unspoken rule everyone knows
“When you have guests from out of town, you have to take them to visit Falls Park.” — Pat B. (The best way to fall for Greenville.)
“Greenville is a super friendly city. Assume the best in others.” — James G. (We couldn’t agree more.)
“All morning dog walkers, joggers, and peeps out for their morning constitutional along Main Street always say ‘mornin’’ and smile when you pass another person going the other way.” — Sally E.
“Don’t plan a fall wedding or major event without checking the Clemson and USC home football schedule.” — Christopher M.
“There is a West End, Southernside, North Main, but nothing east. And it’s East North, not North East (non-Greenvillians have a hard time with that).” — James G. (Is it just us or did you get a little dizzy too?)

In 2020, the YMCA of Greenville identified a need to provide food to families experiencing food insecurity in Greenville. Fast forward more than three years, and the organization continues to identify a growing need.
Danielle here. I spent time with the YMCA (and its awesome volunteers) stuffing bags of food and delivering them to motels in our city. They need your help to keep the program going, so here’s how you can support them and Try This.
What we tried:
I met up with the volunteers at First Baptist Church to pack thousands of dollars worth of food to deliver. While half of the volunteers focused on bags to feed families, the other half assembled bags of snacks for students at local schools.
Volunteers divide up the snack bags and split up drop-off duties around the city while a handful of other volunteers load into the “Y on the Fly” van to deliver the food to local motels.

What to do with fall waste in Greenville, SC
It’s time to gourd. | Photo by 6AMcity
Check out our pro tips + tricks on what to do with your Halloween pumpkins.
🎃 Compost
Greenville County put together a list of compostable items + the benefits of composting. Pro tip: If you decide to trash your pumpkin, the City of Greenville asks that you put it in your green waste container, not on the curb.
🎃 Feed the birds
Provide our feathered friends with their own holiday feast and turn your pumpkin into a birdfeeder. Cut the pumpkin in half, scoop out the seeds, and fill with birdseed. Tie two lengths of twine around the bottom to hang in your backyard.
🎃 Make a snack
If your pumpkin hasn’t spoiled, you can use it to make bread, soup, pies, or other desserts. Food Network has plenty of pumpkin recipes for you to try + who doesn’t love a fall-themed dish?
Lawn full of leaves you want to get rid of? We’ve got you.
We are now entering the 334 days of the year that don’t include October, and I’m pretty in my feelings about it. Luckily, there’s always something fun to do in Greenville to take my mind off of it.
