Smiley’s new plans

Smiley’s Acoustic Cafe will reopen as a new concept in partnership with another West End venue

When we told you Smiley’s Acoustic Cafe was closing after 17 years in business, the response — unsurprisingly — was that of a heartbroken community:
  • “So sad! That place was magic,” Lydia commented.
  • “Thanks for the memories,” Letitia said.
  • “So many fun memories there! This is heartbreaking,” Ashley also replied.
We come bearing a happy update: Smiley’s will return to Greenville in partnership with On the Roxx + Smiley’s on the Roxx will open Wednesday, Sept. 6.

Still in the West End, you’ll find the new concept just a block away from Smiley’s former Augusta Street location at 734 S. Main St., first reported by the Post and Courier Greenville.

The partnership is described as “the best of both worlds,” bringing together the top features of both venues to create a “premier small live music venue.”

What’s new?

The stage at On the Roxx has been rebuilt, there are plans to add TVs to make the business a destination for sports fans, and the menu will be focused on shareable + small bites (with plans to add a “more extensive” menu in the future).

The venue will also feature local draft beers, a craft cocktail list, a dog-friendly outdoor patio, and optimized space for live music.

Click the button below to read the full feature from The Post and Courier, including how this partnership came together so quickly after Smiley’s announced its closure last month.

Greenville’s growth a century ago

“Our Country First, Then Greenville” is a new book by Dr. Courtney Tollison Hartness — a Furman University history professor — exploring how Greenville evolved into a modern city from 1880 to 1930.

“I kept uncovering such fascinating people that many Greenvillians are completely unaware of, and so I wanted to write a story that incorporated their efforts into the narrative,” Hartness told the Greenville Journal.

The book explores how Greenville’s experience during World War I generated massive development in the Upstate + how it set the stage for ongoing growth that we still see now.

From the editor
As Idalia moves across the Gulf of Mexico, we’re keeping a close eye on the weather and any potential Upstate impacts. I’m no meteorologist, but I’m paying close attention to the teams at our local news stations. According to the team at WYFF, Idalia’s current track is south and east of us which means we could get some wind and the rain Wednesday and Thursday, depending on the speed of the storm. The Lowcountry and SC coast will likely see more impacts.
