Calling all pickleballers

Pickball courts at Timmons Park in the Overbrook neighborhood of Greenville SC
Fancy a game of pickleball? | Photo via The City of Greenville
Have y’all heard about pickleball? If you haven’t, it’s kind of a big dill. Pickleball shares similarities with tennis, table tennis, and badminton (as well as other paddle ball sports). It has official rules, regulations, and even its own organization — the USA Pickleball Association.

What to know

Here’s the lowdown on the game so you don’t find yourself in a pickle:
  • It can be played indoors or outdoors.
  • The court is badminton-sized (20’ x 44’) with a modified tennis net.
  • The pickleball itself is made of plastic and has holes, like a Wiffle ball.
  • The paddle is a little smaller than a tennis racquet.
  • It can be played as doubles or singles (think: two-four people)
Upstate Pickleball says there are “easily 2,000+ pickleball players in the Upstate area.” If you’re looking to join in, Greenville has a number of locations featuring dedicated pickleball courts. Check out Upstate Pickleball’s court map, including tennis courts lined for pickleball (think: McPherson Park), membership locations, and senior centers.

How did pickleball get its name?

B. The pickle boat in rowing races

According to USA Pickleball, the wife of founder Joel Pritchard — Joan Pritchard — named the game in 1965 in “reference to the thrown-together leftover non-starters in the ‘pickle boat’ of crew races.” However, many (incuding the Pritchard’s neighbors) believed the sport was named after the Pritchard’s family dog, Pickles.

Through some investigating, USA Pickleball found the dog was born in 1968, three years after pickleball was founded, helping to prove that the sport’s name was inspired by the pickle boat.
