Ja It's My Future

Junior Achievement of Upstate South Carolina is currently helping students in every middle school in Greenville County think about their futures. With the help of awesome volunteers and teachers, these students have the opportunity to learn about career clusters, create their personal brand, discover and develop soft skills, and map out their careers to look at potential internship and job opportunities (not just ones requiring a degree).

Northwood Middle School JA It’s My Future schedule

The GVLtoday team stopped by the JA It’s My Future program at Northwood Middle School earlier this month to get a first-hand experience with students who were creating their long-term career plans with the help of some volunteers from the Spinx Company.

The Spinx Company employees (and JA volunteers) explained topics like job outlook, career mapping, and the importance of soft skills. The class even participated in an activity to understand high-growth careers and how technology and other economic changes affect the future of some industries.

The volunteers and students also dove into the requirements needed for particular industries to get focused on what the students need to do to get where they want to be.

JA is always in need of volunteers to guide students through mentoring opportunities like JA in a Day. But don’t think you have to do it on your own – there are training programs all volunteers attend + interactive powerpoints for the classroom.

If you are interested in helping young students take the reins on their futures, find out more info on how to get involved here.
