Event Spotlight

Let’s go to the (book) fair

A group of people milling about a book fair. The image looks warm, with a orangey yellow hue to proceedings. People are dressed in bright, summery clothing, and a nearby tent has books under the canopy. A large tree looms over other tents in the background, and the sun is shining down, casting shadows as folks walk around.

Remember your tote bag.

It’s time to get off BookTok and enjoy some reads the old-fashioned way — in person.

Today, Front Paige Media and New Realm Brewing Co. are combining to host a book fair at the brewery for the first time ever. Browse 50+ vendors from 12 to 5 p.m., where your next read, a cold drink, and awesome community vibes await. There’s also a talk at 2 p.m. from romance authors Marina Adair and Celeste Briars. You’ll need a ticket for that.

News Notes

A bowl of shrimp and grits at Soby's. The bowl is white on a wooden table, with a blurred background showing other diners, wine glasses, and desserts. We are low and close to the bowl.

Soby’s, anyone?

Eat

What is your favorite comfort food? For South Carolinians, shrimp and grits are at the top of the list, according to Reader’s Digest. We recommend sampling some for yourself at Soby’s for research purposes.

Pets

Did you know? According to data from Zillow, 58% of renters are pet owners, meaning that rentals who roll out the welcome mat to Fido and Mittens may fill up faster than those that don’t. We can’t say we blame them — Greenville is a pet’s paradise after all.

Fun Fact

The world’s oldest hotel has been welcoming guests since 705 A.D. under the ownership of the same family for 52 generations — Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan in Japan. Over 1,000 years later, The Westin Poinsett opened, becoming Greenville’s oldest hotel still in operation.
Sometimes, a picture-perfect moment happens. Even rarer than that is for someone to catch it on film. Lucky for us, those moments are portrayed in this year’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year award. This is your sign to bring your camera to the Greenville Zoo to hone your craft.

Number

57. That’s how many days are left until daylight saving time ends and the clock falls back one hour. Translation: It’s time to take advantage of golden-hour hangs after work while you still can. Might we suggest a sunset stroll through one of GVL’s parks?

The Word

Kiss cam. That’s one of the 1,235 new words added by dictionary.com. Perhaps this new, real word will come in handy next time you head to a Swamp Rabbits Game.

Regional

Four new Pringles flavors will be popping onto shelves this month: Smoky Bacon, Smoky Cheddar, Smoky Mesquite BBQ + Sharp White Cheddar. You can also look for two new varieties of Pringles Mingles puffs, but we’re anxiously waiting for the day the brand turns peaches into a chip. (Parade)

Finance

Fact or fiction: Active professionals should be saving 15% of their income for retirementeven in their 20s. Here’s what the experts say.*

Post of the Day

“Capuchin-o” was right there.

While Steam Coffee and Cream may have missed the chance for a stellar, monkey-themed menu item in honor of their new guest, their joe certainly makes up for it. The Fountain Inn business is featured in our guide of the best local coffee shops.

The Wrap

Exactly seven weeks from today, Greenville will be lined with Spinx Run Fest runners vying for medals over a variety of distances.

While it might be a little too late to train for the full 26.2-mile marathon, there’s also a half marathon, 10K, 5K, and 1K kids race all on the agenda. You may even see some GVLtoday faces there.
