News Notes

State

Duke Energy plans to merge its Carolinas subsidiaries in 2027, saying the move could save up to $3.2 billion long term. At the same time, it also seeks a 12% rate hike — about a $16.79 increase on a household using 1,000 kilowatt-hours per month in the Upstate — starting next spring. (The Post and Courier Greenville)

Announced

Things are heating up. Lewis Barbecue’s Hatch Chile Roast returns Sunday, Sept. 7 with 4,000 pounds of peppers, live music, chef-made eats, and a chile-eating contest. The free festival runs from 1 to 4 p.m. at the restaurant with donations supporting Mill Village Farms.

Coming Soon

QahWah Palace — a new coffee shop — will open soon near One City Plaza on Main Street. The two-story café will serve Yemeni sun-dried beans, Adeni chai, and qishr (a traditional coffee-husk drink) in a marble-and-gold space featuring study areas and a conference room — opening date TBD. (Upstate Business Journal)

Today Is

The last 8 p.m. sunset until April 2026. Based on astronomical data, Greenville, SC lost approximately 57 minutes of daylight during August 2025 as we march towards the autumn equinox coming up on Monday, Sept. 22.

Kids

Greenville County has a two-year waitlist for 4,000+ kids needing child care, and advocacy group Greenville First Steps is pushing to expand home-based options. Right now, only 51 of 223 providers operate in homes, and officials say zoning and lease rules remain key barriers. Read the full breakdown in the Greenville Journal.

State

South Carolina’s new Hands-Free Act takes effect this coming Monday, Sept. 1, banning drivers from holding phones or other devices. Warnings will be issued for the first 180 days, with fines of $100 (and points for repeat offenses) starting Feb. 28.

Development

Second Presbyterian Church in the West End wants to build a new 20,000-sqft fellowship hall with classrooms and a 10,000-sqft gathering space. To offset lost parking, a nearby vacant office building will be demolished for a new lot. If approved, construction could begin next year. (The Post and Courier Greenville)

Post of the Day

GVL_Mayberry_Park_POD_AUG2025
It’s time to play ball, because baseball is back at Greenville’s Mayberry Park. Yesterday, a ribbon-cutting and ceremonial first pitch welcomed the next generation of ballplayers, a century after the park originally opened.

In 1925, Mayberry Park was the city’s only recreational space available to Black children during segregation. Despite its rough fields and sparse amenities, it became a cornerstone for the Southernside, West Greenville, Sterling, and Greasy Corner neighborhoods — and laid the groundwork for Greenville’s baseball roots.

After years of neighborhood advocacy and a $3.3 million investment, the city has restored Mayberry Park as a state-of-the-art Little League field within Unity Park. Funded through a public-private partnership — led by Greenville Drive owner Craig Brown and his wife, Vicki — the field now boasts grandstands, tunnels, concession stands, and historic panels honoring its past.

The Wrap

Today’s Edition By: Danielle

I am so excited to share the incredible list of Greenvillians embarking on their Leadership Greenville journey as Class 52. It was an honor to be on the selection committee to help select this group of individuals. If you’re on this list, keep an open mind, ask lots of questions, and take as many notes as possible — you won’t want to forget a single moment.

It was this time last year that I began my own experience as a member of Class 51. Peep some of my favorite memories from the experience below.

Although it will be several months before applications to join Class 53 open, registration for Opportunity Greenville is now available. The five-week program starts on Sept. 29 and explores the inner workings of Greenville.
