One of the best parts of summer in the South? Tomatoes. Tomato season is in full swing and the Upstate is gearing up to celebrate.

If you’re team tomato sandwich, take note:
  • Duke’s Hot Tomato Summer returns to Greenville Thursday, July 17-Sunday, July 27. This annual week-long celebration showcases local restaurants’ creative dishes featuring, you guessed it, fresh tomatoes and Duke’s Mayonnaise.
  • The TR Farmers Market’s 10th Annual Tomato Sandwich Taste-Off will be held on Saturday, July 26. A ticket covers a platter of tomato sandwich creations and a chance to vote for the winner.
  • Need something to hold you over in the meantime? Kitchen Sync has one of my favorite tomato pies in town back on their menu.
  • Or you can head to one of 10 Upstate farmers markets to find your own ingredients.
Tomatoes not really your thing? Try one of these top sandwich spots, or read about our blind pimento cheese taste test.

News Notes

Travel

Condé Nast Traveler just listed Asheville (a ~1.5 hour drive from Greenville) in its roundup of the best affordable family vacations in the US. The article highlights the city’s outdoor activities, “vibrant arts scene,” and downtown area.

Correction

Brunch for a Cause is happening today, July 12, at all Table 301 restaurants (plus, Passarelle + Jianna). All sales during brunch and lunch service support flood relief in Texas. Since 2004, Table 301 has raised $220,000+ for relief efforts following natural disasters.

Watch

It seems South Carolinians love tuning in to “Property Brothers.” That’s the state’s most popular HGTV show, according to a recent study. If you’re ready to turn off the TV and do some house hunting of your own, you might want to brush up on Greenville’s cost of living.

Drink

Coconuts for coffee? Local spots are hopping on this summertime trend and adding tropical twists to their menus. I’m eyeing the Coconut Cloud Matcha from Third Place Coffee House.

History

It might feel like Y2K was just yesterday, but we’re officially closer to 2050 than we are to 2000. While we have no idea what’s in store for the next 25 years, we are looking forward to these local events in the next couple of weeks. (Buzzfeed)

Try This

On these hot summer days, sometimes you’re just looking for an indoor activity that won’t break the bank. We have you covered with a list of free activities.

Eat

McDonald’s is spicing up its menu and bringing the summer heat with new Spicy McMuffin breakfast sandwiches — made with all the classic ingredients + spicy pepper sauce. Can’t make it before the 10:30 a.m. cutoff? Try these brunch spots around Greenville instead.

Real Estate

Maybe you really can have it all. Among its many features, this 5,700-sqft home on Ware Street has a wine cellar, home gym, electric vehicle chargers, rooftop access and views of downtown, multiple sets of washer + dryer units, a bunk room, butler’s pantry, 2 home offices, 2 primary bedroom suites, walk-in closets, a glass elevator, an outdoor grilling kitchen, and a home screening theater with seating for 12 people.

You may never want to leave — and if you do, Falls Park is just a 15-minute walk from the front door.

The Buy

Nordstrom’s adorable Winona Slide Sandal, newly marked down and perfect to slip on for summer date nights, dinners, and hangs. We love: The chic blue color + the rafia heel.
