News Notes

Ranked

We’re so good, we made it in the title. Forbes recently released its “Best Places to Retire in 2025” list, with the subheadline, “Greenville and Other Surprisingly Affordable Gems.” Citing our below national median-priced homes, our good air quality, and our “agreeable climate,” we can’t say we disagree.

Mansion Monday

Today’s listing — recently featured in CIRCA — is technically not a mansion, but instead, a 4-bedroom, 3-bathroom home in Fountain Inn. Featuring an eat-in kitchen, a state-of-the-art laundry room, and original oak hardwood floors, you can live your best cottagecore life.

Number

$9.25 million. That’s how much the initially approved operational budget for the 2025-2026 fiscal year in Travelers Rest is. The funds will go towards hiring three full-time city employees, adding a fire air tank system + new fire truck, and won’t include a tax increase. (Greenville Journal)

Watch

Let’s face it, you all wanted more goat content. In case you missed it, the goats are back in Cleveland Park to dine on kudzu, poison oak, and other invasive plants. The City of Greenville dropped a new video of the crazy kids hard at work, and it’s worth a baaaa-tch.

Kids

India, meet Greenville. Thanks to The Children’s Museum of the Upstate’s newest Cultural Corner feature, kids can experience the sights, sounds, and stories of India without needing a passport. The exhibit opens Saturday, May 24, at 9 a.m., so pack your bags and head over.

Sports

The Swamp Rabbit Hockey Team released its schedule for the 2025-2026 season. Games start in October and run through April, so you have plenty of time to catch a game. Did we mention season tickets are already on sale?

Announced

Let’s get to at work. AtWork, a staffing franchise specializing in facilitating company growth, opened its newest location — adding to its 100+ locations worldwide — in Aston’s Verdae Village shopping complex in Greenville. There are also plans to open one in Spartanburg.

It’s all by design

City staff will decide the fate of these renovations. | Photos and renderings via The City of Greenville
We’re breaking down what the City of Greenville’s Design Review Board (DRB) approved + what was deferred during the meeting on Thursday, May 15.

Approved (with conditions)

Rey’s, 20 N. Main St. | Exterior and facade renovations like:
  • A new patio with outdoor seating
  • A pass-through window
  • A new metal marquee and lighting
  • Terrazzo tile flooring
Broadstreet, 211 N. Main St. | Exterior plans for the private equity firm include:
  • Vintage-style outdoor columns
  • Decorative glass panels
Commercial building, 15 E. Coffee St. | Although no tenants have been determined yet, facade improvements will cover:
  • Two new entry doors
  • Colored metal awnings
  • A large, transparent glass window

Deferred

Two houses, 9 and 11 Watson Ave. | Plans were submitted to demolish these two houses to make room for a proposed two-story duplex or triplex, but the DRB asked the applicant to find adaptive ways to reuse the homes.
