News Notes

Tech

We may be saying farewell to TikTok. The clock app will be removed from the US App stores on Sunday after the Supreme Court upheld a ban on the platform. Don’t fret just yet — you can still scroll (albeit less mindlessly) through GVLtoday’s Instagram feed of new local coffee shops, exciting updates, and plenty of memes.

Travel

Valentine’s Day getaway, anyone? According to Expedia, January and February are two of the cheapest months to travel — you can spend 15% less on flights and 45% less on hotel rooms compared to summer rates. Perhaps now is a good time to plan that road trip to Pawleys Island. (New York Times)

Finance

It’s not fun, but the IRS will start processing 2024 tax returns on Monday, Jan. 27. Tax season might be nothing new, but the IRS has new chatbot tech to help answer your basic questions. Starting in February, you can also get free tax assistance through VITA.

Listen

What’s the best song about South Carolina? If you said “The Charleston” by James P. Johnson, you agree with this list of “Best Songs About Every State.” Want to listen to songs from Greenville artists? We’ve got a playlist for that.

When it comes to Greenville’s shopping scene, we love a good treasure hunt — and a good bargain. Our city and county are home to several stellar swap meets, cool co-ops, fabulous vintage shops, and resale gems. So get in, we’re going shopping.

Vintage Shops

Artifacts of Greenville | Reader Martha Q says this spot “has a great mix of antiques for the home and garden” — don’t miss your photo op with the must-see purple chicken coop in the garden (more like palace).

The Vintage Market of Greenville | Save a few hours to rifle through the stacks of vintage signs, doors, clothing, and more.

Antiques

The Rock House Antiques | Add to your antique china collection, snag prints of your favorite works of art, or fetch a crystal chandelier to enhance your home.

Vintage Now Modern | Stop in during a shopping day for antique home decor, chalk paint for your own refinishing projects, and other accessories. Pro tip: Tour the virtual showroom.
Shop 'til you drop

The Wrap

GVL_Danielle_Wrap_NOV2024
This time last weekend, the snow was melting. Now there’s buzz generating around more winter weather. The National Weather Service says it is, “monitoring the potential for a low pressure system to produce wintry precipitation sometime in the middle of next week, but confidence remains low.”
