Here’s what to do if your home was damaged by the storm. | Photo by Marissa Craft
It’s been several days since Helene passed through the Upstate, but devastation remains. As crews work to clean up fallen trees and downed power lines, there are also resources for home and business owners affected by storm damage.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) approved support for Greenville County (among other counties) that will:
Provide direct financial assistance to residents with uninsured damages to their property — register online, via the FEMA App, or by calling 1-800-621-3362.
Provide public assistance to local governments for debris removal + other emergency protective measures.
Select “Tools” from the tool bar at the bottom.
Select “Damage Assessment.”
Fill out your information.
As you clean up, here are a few more tips:
Contact your insurance company as soon as possible to find out what your policy covers — don’t sign any contract for repairs until an assessment is complete.
If you need to pay for emergency repairs or supplies to protect your property, document all costs and keep your receipts.
Gear up with sturdy shoes, long pants, long sleeves, and gloves.
Be cautious of hazards like nails and broken glass + avoid downed power lines.

🧇 What is the Waffle House Index?
What is the Waffle House index?

You know a storm is serious if the local Waffle House is closed.
City Editor Danielle here. After Helene knocked out power to most of our area, I found myself in search of electricity and phone service to get this article written. It was no surprise to see all of the businesses along Woodruff Road dark and empty, aside from a Waffle House with a packed parking lot and a line out the door.
That’s essentially the idea behind the Waffle House Index, an informal way of measuring the severity of a weather event. Coined by former FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate after Waffle Houses remained open during a tornado in Joplin, Missouri in 2011.
If you’ve ever eaten smothered hash browns in a Waffle House while the apocalypse rages outside, you know what he’s talking about. After all, the diner — which has over 1,900 locations across the US — is known for its preparedness during natural disasters.
Fast-dissolving melatonin mints that support sleep hygiene. They’re sugar-free and formulated with a natural blend of lemon balm, chamomile, passion flower, and elderberry — all ingredients that help regulate your sleep cycle and promote relaxation.
There were so many moments this weekend where I was really proud of our community:
Clare’s Creamery posted that its ice cream was melting, and you showed up + showed out to support their small business.
Sum Bar stayed open all weekend, and even partnered with Swamp Rabbit Cafe & Grocery and Rabbit Crest Farms to give away produce so it wouldn’t go to waste.
I know there were too many other examples to fit in this small space where people gave away food, helped each other cut down branches, and opened spaces for people to find community.
We saw them all over our social media feeds. Let’s keep it going as we continue to get through this together.
