Chances are you fall in one of two categories: You’re soaking up the last moments of the summer sun or you’re eager for all things pumpkin spice. If you’re the latter, we have some exciting news for you: The apple orchards are starting to open and picking season has commenced.

We’ve rounded up 10+ apple orchards within driving distance of Greenville (with options for you to pick or just pick-up) so you can get your fix of apples, apple cider, and — everyone’s favorite — apple cider donuts. We know it’s early, but if you’ve been apple picking in the Carolinas before, you know the earlier in the season you can hit the orchards the better.

South Carolina: “The Tastier Peach State”

Sticking with the produce theme, we’re taking a look at a battle that pits one state against another: Georgia, “The Peach State” vs. South Carolina, “The Tastier Peach State,” which is the nickname Clemson’s official “peach expert” gave SC over a decade ago.

Let’s take a look, battle by battle, at why we think SC peaches come out on top in this so-called “Peach War.”

The History

  • Mid-1700s: The Cherokee Nation grew peaches in this region.
  • Late 1850s: Commercial shipping out of the region began.
  • 1935: There were 233 packing houses and three million+ peach trees in Spartanburg County alone.
  • 1984: South Carolina adopted the peach as its state fruit.
  • 1995: Georgia adopted the peach as its state fruit.
Winner: South Carolina — we declared the peach as our state fruit first. Checkmate.

From the editor
Every time I write our apple picking guide, I can’t believe it’s closing in on fall (aka my favorite season in Greenville).

We like to publish these lists early to help you plan ahead, so a lot of these orchards may not be selling apples yet. However, if that “history” section has you hankering for some fresh peaches, our friends at Kidding Around Greenville put together a list of places to pick peaches, and you’ll find a lot of the same orchards.
