Greenville filmmakers won a James Beard Award for their short film about Sum Bar
Lights, camera, dumplings. | Still from “Great Wall” by Undercurrent Film Company
The James Beard Awards are the culinary industry’s highest honor, and Greenville has its first-ever winner, but it’s not a chef. Rather, local filmmakers — Undercurrent Film Company — brought home the award for “Visual Media - Short Form” at the annual ceremony in Chicago.
The winning film titled “Great Wall” was Director Rioin Oshiro’s idea. It followed Khailing Neoh as she opened the popular downtown dim sum restaurant Sum Bar.
“We came from different places but were united through food, " Oshiro explained about his discovery of Neoh’s story while making his acceptance speech.
