Be the broker: Which vacant office spaces would you like to see become affordable housing?
Let the brainstorming session commence. | Photo by James Simpson Photography
Have you noticed some of the empty office space around town? In Greenville’s central business district — which boasts 5,765,225 sqft of inventory — office vacancies in the third quarter of 2023 were 13.6%. That’s a slight 0.2% decrease from the previous quarter.
Compare those numbers to the national office vacancy rate, which was 17.8% as of September 2023. One possible use for vacant offices? Affordable housing.
Recently, the White House released a new plan to convert commercial buildings into residential housing — affordable housing in particular.
Resources will be made available from 20+ programs across multiple agencies, including the Department of Transportation and the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
We’re talking below-market loans, grants, and tax credits... all available to help take advantage of pre-existing buildings to make more affordable housing.
Which vacant spaces would you like to see converted?
Have you passed an empty office building that would be a sweet apartment? How about some empty warehouses near public transportation that would make for a quick commute?
Click the button below to tell us which spaces you’d like to see remade into housing, and we may feature your picks in an upcoming newsletter.

Do you love rom-coms, farces, and contemporary shows that take inspiration from one of the greatest comedies of the last 100 years? Then you’re going to love “ODD.”
This world premiere from the mind of Furman alumna Cammi Stilwell is an homage to “The Odd Couple” from a Gen Z perspective. Think: Two roommates and best friends, as similar as they are different, navigating a series of disastrous events (with plenty of comedy ensuing).
“ODD” runs Dec. 1-17, and tickets are $35. Pro tip: “I Pay What I Can Sunday” is happening Dec. 3.
Scoundrel made Esquire’s list of “The Best New Restaurants in America, 2023.” Lauding its “French fare with flair,” you can read the full feature on all of Chef Joe’s Cash courses that helped his Main Street spot land on the list.
Coming Soon
864, meet 821. A new area code of 821 will overlay the 864 region (including Greenville) in 2024. This only affects people getting new phone numbers, so existing numbers will keep the 864. (WYFF 4)
Civic
The City of Greenville is starting a Homeless Court, and expects to launch the program in 2024. The free and voluntary diversion program is designed to help people experiencing homelessness — who have nonviolent criminal records and offenses — exit the criminal justice system with little-to-no impact on their record.

Get a sneak peek of the new Belladina’s location on South Hudson Street (near Unity Park). The Upstate Business Journal reports the Italian restaurant and pizzeria’s second location could open next month.
