A haunted history

The haunted history of the Greenville Tuberculosis Hospital

Many of you know about Herdklotz Park — located at 126 Beverly Rd. — but do you know the haunted history of the Greenville Tuberculosis Hospital, which once sat on the park’s grounds?

The Greenville Tuberculosis Hospital was used to treat hundreds of tuberculosis (TB) patients from 1930s to the 1950s. A cure for TB wasn’t discovered until the 1950s.

If that history doesn’t send a shiver down your spine, it also served as a psychiatric hospital and a prisoner release site for some time.

In 2002, most of the building was burned, and later demolished. The basement door was sealed up and a playground was built on top of it. You can still visit the basement door + read about the history on the plaque that sits outside it.

Is it really haunted?

Visitors have claimed to hear strange sounds on the playground, including banging, screaming, and the sound of unseen bells. At night, people have spotted shadows + some people living nearby have claimed to see these shadowy beings in their homes.

Coming Soon

Bergamo West, a new Italian market and deli from the team behind Ristorante Bergamo, is coming below the former Village Studios and Gallery in the Village of West Greenville. A team member told the Upstate Business Journal plans are still being finalized with the contractor and there’s no opening date yet, but we’ll keep you posted.

Open

Cheers. The Cocktail Company — a new cocktail lounge — is now open at 355 S. Main St. in Camperdown (next to Bank of America).

Biz

Southern Tide — a Greenville-based clothing company — will move its headquarters to the historic Borden Building on at 711 W. Washington St. (near Unity Park). The company says it hopes to “keep as many of the original elements as possible” as renovations on the building continue. (Upstate Business Journal)

Closing

O’Charley’s, located at 671 Fairview Rd., closed its doors, according to a recording that’s played when you call the restaurant.

Outdoors

Bike Walk Greenville — a local nonprofit working to improve bike and pedestrian safety — helped map a two-mile route from White Horse Road to the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail at East Bramlett Road + new signs have been installed. The goal: Helping residents who do not have cars get around the city. (The Greenville Journal)

Travel

Looking to take a trip out West? Southwest Airlines announced plans to add flights to Denver, CO from Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport starting June 8, 2024. The flights will be on Saturdays and Sundays. (Upstate Business Journal)

We had to pick our jaws up off the floor when we saw the video Brad G. sent in of this home at 116B W. Augusta Pl. We wish our newsletter had the ability to share videos, because the talking Frankenstein and pumpkin pushed this home to the top of the winner’s podium.
