Designs unveiled for Greenville’s Airport District

The City of Greenville has a new focus area known as the “Airport District,” encompassing the area between Pleasantburg Drive and Haywood Road (south of I-385 and north of Laurens Road), with the Greenville Downtown Airport (GMU) and the Greenville Convention Center as its anchors.

What are they focused on?

In 2023, city leaders will craft a 15-year master plan that pairs the city’s economic development goals with the logistical requirements of developing around an airport.

The consulting team at CallisonRTKL — a global architecture, planning, and design company — is offering its expertise. Peek at some of the firm’s airport-related designs in other markets.

While the city explores how to best support growth around the airport to support more recreation and commerce opportunities, GMU is also focused on its growth, with plans to work with the FAA on improvements and additional resources to its runways and facilities.

How can I get involved?

After last month’s public visioning session, which gave Greenvillians a chance to be heard early in the planning process, it’s time to develop more detailed plans.

A two-day charrette (read: design session) kicks off today, April 25, at the Greenville Convention Center in room 104B.

Residents can speak with the city’s planners, designers, market specialists, and engineers to help create detailed designs for different areas in the Airport District.

Want to participate? Join the all-day sessions from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., or swing by after work for a daily summary and public comment session from 5 to 6 p.m.

Try This: Experience Biltmore as an Annual Passholder

Presented by a GVLtoday Partner

For WNC natives like me, it isn’t officially spring in the mountains until Biltmore Estate is drenched in brilliant, blossoming flowers. City Editor Brook here, and I recently tiptoed through the tulips and explored the benefits of being an Annual Passholder, which includes unlimited daytime visits to Biltmore year-round. (Pro tip: Passes are on sale now until Sunday, April 30.) Read along to discover how you can Try This.

What we tried:

We took a complimentary-for-Passholders daytime tour of Biltmore. While it’s always awe-inspiring, it’s currently resplendent with dazzling greenery + blooms galore.

What not to miss:

The gardens and the Conservatory. Featuring thousands of colorful tulips and home to the estate’s annual Biltmore Blooms display, the gardens are simply stunning.

The glass-enclosed Conservatory boasts an array of exotic, tropical, and rare plants — including the breathtaking Orchid Room featuring more than 500 orchids — and is so lovely it’s nearly impossible to tear your eyes away. That is, until you find you’ve worked up an appetite and need sustenance, which you can find at Antler Hill Village.

Pro tip: Annual Passholders enjoy discounts on shopping, dining, and lodging, plus discounted tickets for their friends + family and free entry for kids 16 and under.*

From the editor
Have you noticed the piles of dirt on the perimeter of GMU? I spent some time at the airport recently, and it turns out there’s a pretty creative story behind the mounds. As the airport prepares to grow, its team reached out to local developers and accepts leftover dirt donations to pile up and save for the airport’s future projects. We dig it.
