The legacies behind the landmarks

Scattered across our city are places with stories to tell about Black history in Greenville. You may pass some of these spots on your morning commute to work or admire them on a jog, but do you know the legacies behind the landmarks?
Recognized for its role in developing Greenvilleâs Black business district, the Working Benevolent State Grand Lodge was built in 1922 toprovide offices for Black doctors, lawyers, and dentists, along with a newsroom for a local paper, insurance firms, and Greenvilleâs first Black mortuary. In the 1960s, the Temple was the center for Greenvilleâs civil rights activities.
Organized during Reconstruction as a âmission church,â the first AME Church in Greenville â Allen Temple â was built between 1929 and 1930 by Juan Benito Molina, the only Black architect in Greenville in the early 20th century.
