🏒 Greenville Swamp Rabbits (ECHL) | Est. 2010

The Swamp Rabbits played as the Greenville Road Warriors from 2010-2015 after the Johnstown Chiefs (1987-2010) relocated to South Carolina from Johnstown, Pennsylvania. In August 2015, the team became the Greenville Swamp Rabbits to “strengthen its ties” to the area. The team has been affiliated with many different AHL and NHL teams over the years — like the Carolina Hurricanes and the Charlotte Checkers — and is currently affiliated with the Los Angeles Kings and the Ontario Reign.

The legacies behind the landmarks

Scattered across our city are places with stories to tell about Black history in Greenville. You may pass some of these spots on your morning commute to work or admire them on a jog, but do you know the legacies behind the landmarks?

Working Benevolent Temple, 131 Falls St.

Recognized for its role in developing Greenville’s Black business district, the Working Benevolent State Grand Lodge was built in 1922 to provide offices for Black doctors, lawyers, and dentists, along with a newsroom for a local paper, insurance firms, and Greenville’s first Black mortuary. In the 1960s, the Temple was the center for Greenville’s civil rights activities.

Allen Temple AME Church, 109 Green Ave.

Organized during Reconstruction as a “mission church,” the first AME Church in Greenville — Allen Temple — was built between 1929 and 1930 by Juan Benito Molina, the only Black architect in Greenville in the early 20th century.
